Carolina Biological Supply Company
Founded in 1927, Carolina Biological Supply Company supplies products for science educators worldwide. The company sells thousands of items – ranging from the simplest one-celled organisms to laboratory equipment – from a 1,100-page catalog. In addition, it has partnered with leading curriculum developers, like the National Science Resources Center (an organization of the National Academies and the Smithsonian Institution) and the Lawrence Hall of Science, to produce inquiry-based science curriculums that enable students to carry out hands-on science experiments in the life, physical, and earth sciences, as well as technology. Carolina publishes its complete catalog online, and provides free classroom activities and other resources for educators online.
The company’s main facility is in Burlington, NC, where it has 15 buildings on
a 48-acre campus that includes several springs, ponds and a greenhouse. Other
offices include specimen collection and processing laboratories in Texas and
Louisiana and a large distribution center a few minutes from the headquarters
complex. The company has approximately 400 employees, many of whom have worked
for the company for decades. The company is still privately owned by
descendents of the founder, Dr. Thomas E. Powell Jr., a biology professor at
Elon College.
Carolina provides the materials that students and teachers to do science,
including living and preserved organisms, laboratory equipment and supplies,
and complete instructional kits. The company also publishes inquiry-based
elementary and middle school curriculums, including nationally renowned Science
and Technology Concepts Program™ (STC®, for grades K-8), GEMS Kits®, and Math
Out of the Box®.
CPO Science was founded in 1994 with the vision of
becoming a leader in secondary science education materials. The vision and
passion at CPO Science continues to be on developing, producing, marketing, and
selling high quality, inquiry-based teaching and learning systems. CPO Science
offers a wide range of materials and services including innovative basal
textbook programs (that integrate the student text, teacher support material,

levels for grades 6-8, grades 7-11, and grades 11/12+. Designed to accompany
each of our equipment modules, the curriculum comes with student activity
guides, detailed teacher's reference materials and assessment tools.
CPO Science, formerly known as Cambridge Physics Outlet, is based in Peabody,
MA and is a division of Delta Education's publishing group and School
Specialty, Inc.
Delta Education was founded more than 30 years ago as a small company providing quality science materials as a response to the shift towards active investigation by students and teachers in the classroom. Tom Richardson, Delta's founder, started building kits for schools in his rec room, creating products that correlated with the curriculum.
As teachers began to recognize the importance of inquiry-based science-students learning scientific methods through investigations-Delta Education met the growing need for materials by starting to build custom kits for school systems. As a result, Delta Education assumed a leading role in improving science instruction nationwide, with educational programs and resources that embody the best in inquiry-based science, providing teachers with opportunities to truly engage their students.

SS Science's philosophy is that
inquiry based hands-on science is a method for teaching and learning that
focuses on the use of activities and investigative equipment. This process
involves students of all ages and learning abilities. Using inquiry-based
science, students assume the proactive role of scientists by observing the
environment around them, establishing the issues, asking questions, and
conducting experiments to try out ideas and verify results. In addition,
students using inquiry-based methods of learning develop important skills. For
example, communication and collaboration are strengthened through classmates
discussing, writing, reading, and even drawing together.
Products and Services:
Delta Education is the largest producer of curriculum-based K-8 science kits in
the United States. In addition to Science, Delta also supports math instruction
with quality hands-on materials. Delta Education supports teachers by offering
programs that are research-driven, correlated to national and state standards,
and support literacy and math initiatives. Programs include the Full Option
Science System (FOSS), developed in partnership with the Lawrence Hall of Science
at UC Berkeley, and Delta Science Modules (DSM).
eScience Labs provides complete and comprehensive hands-on science kits to support online and traditional courses in need of a laboratory solution. These are the same experiments found in traditional academic labs, but designed and scaled to be performed by modern students anytime, anywhere.
Written by PhD level educators and scientists, eScience Labs’solutions compliment any teaching style or curriculum. Frey Scientific was founded in 1962 under the premise that teachers are
special people, charged with one of the most important jobs in our country:
educating our children so that our societies may continue to flourish and grow.
With that in mind, Frey is known as a science supplier that meets the needs of those
teachers focused on science and math education. Frey found that these teachers
are always looking for great products at reasonable prices, and Frey is
committed to delivering just that. Nearly 10 years ago, School Specialty, Inc.,
a large corporation with several educational companies in their portfolio,
added Frey Scientific to their family of brands.
In 2005, School Specialty acquired the Delta Education family of companies,

Kendall Hunt Publishing Company
Kendall Hunt Publishing is a leading Publisher of inquiry-based, research-based, NSF-funded curricula. Kendall Hunt programs in science, mathematics, language arts, health and physical education are being implemented in schools across the country and throughout the world.
Founded in 1963, LAB-AIDS’ goal has always been to provide the science teacher with unique and exciting products that help facilitate a more meaningful “hands-on” experience in the classroom. The Science Education for Public Understanding Program
(SEPUP), located at the Lawrence Hall of Science at the University of

societal issues and problems. SEPUP’s approach is based on the beliefs that
understanding the interaction between science, technology and the environment

program. From the very beginning, we subscribed to this “issue oriented”
approach, which helps students understand the everyday relevance of science. We

relevant reason why they should learn a particular science concept, and show
them how that concept is applied to their everyday life; you will motivate them
to learn. LAB-AIDS also felt that SEPUP was designing programs that emphasized

students’ initial ideas. Those concepts and ideas are further developed, and
then reinforced through discussion and analysis. We believe this
approach engages the student, and makes learning fun.
